REDCap

An updated instance of the research survey tool REDCap is now available to researchers as part of the Research Lifecycle Programme’s Project Y.

REDCap is a well-known and respected survey and database platform used in the collection of highly restricted data for research. It is especially useful for clinical research data, longitudinal research projects, and working with other researchers who use the platform.

The new instance of REDCap has additional security features, including two-factor authentication (2FA), to help ensure that highly restricted data is fully protected. Despite the enhanced security features, it is still possible to work with collaborators from outside of the University.

Further benefits include:

  • Additional technical support
  • Increased service provision, including user guides and Knowledge Base articles
  • A Microsoft Teams site to encourage a community of best practice, and a place to ask questions and get support

To reflect the additional support and security of this new version there will be a charge of £300 per project using the system. This charge will only be made once the project moves from testing to production, so you can still access REDCap to explore its functionality or to model your eCRFs without being charged.

The charge supports the running of the platform and helps to ensure that the service is sustainable. Researchers should consider this charge when preparing funding bids.

What do you need to do?

Existing users of REDCap do not need to take any action at this stage. However, a shaping exercise will commence shortly to map out the migration of user data to the new REDCap instance.

If you are a researcher using REDCap for the first time you should apply for a REDCap account via The Support Portal, where you should search for ‘REDCap: Internal user access request.’ Remember that a charge of £300 per project will be made once you move from testing to production.

To add external collaborators to a REDCap project you, as the nominator, must be a University of Manchester employee with an IT Services allocated account. The remainder of the process is completed via The Support Portal. An overview of the process can be found on Knowledge Base at: RedCap: External user access

Both pages contain comprehensive guidance on the application processes and links to all relevant forms.

Future Developments

In October we will also be hosting webinars outlining all the key features and processes for REDCap. You can register to attend via Eventbrite:

Useful Information

REDCap is the University’s recommended platform for research that uses highly restricted data. Using REDCap is the easiest and most cost-effective way to ensure that your research meets the information governance and security requirements of the University and funders.

If you are unsure whether REDCap is the right platform for your research, please contact the team by e-mail at: ITS-REDCAP-ADMIN@listserv.manchester.ac.uk

If your research will not feature highly restricted data then you should consider using Qualtrics XM, which is free to staff across The University of Manchester. You can find out more about it on the RLP website
